How To Clean A Glass Railing

Posted on

If your home or business has an indoor or outdoor glass railing, it's subject to greasy fingerprints, moisture spots and other unsightly marks. Because it's transparent, you'll need to clean the railing on a daily or weekly basis, depending on how much use it gets. Glass railings can give a space a sleek, modern look when it's clean and in good condition, so it's important to give it the care and attention it demands.

Here are some tips for keeping your glass railing looking it's best everyday:

Daily Maintenance

Wipe up any debris or messes, such as food or liquid spills, as soon as possible to prevent them from setting onto the glass. It's much easier to thoroughly remove the stains before they dry up and harden.

Simply spray a glass cleaner onto the soiled area and wipe up with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, such as a microfiber rag. If you prefer to go the all-natural route, you can mix one part distilled white vinegar and one part distilled or filtered water in a spray bottle. Avoid using hard water, which can leave mineral deposits on the glass.

As another idea, add a few drops of a gentle dishwashing liquid and a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice to a spray bottle of water and mix well. The acid in the lemon juice will help remove any stubborn stains.

If you have an outdoor glass railing, soften hard bird droppings with a bit of plain, hot water before attempting to clean it off with a cleaning solution for best results.

Weekly Maintenance

Shine up clean a sparkling clean glass railing to give the indoor or outdoor space a fresh, well-maintained appearance. As one method, buff the glass with a crumpled up piece of newspaper. Be careful not to rub too hard or you may transfer the black ink to the glass.

Another eco-friendly way to shine cloudy glass is with a clean chamois cloth. Like a microfiber cloth, chamois material doesn't leave behind lint pieces like cotton or paper towels do.

If you don't mind using chemicals to clean the railing, you can apply a commercial glass-shining product, which will polish the glass to a streak-free sparkle. Some of the products also contain a chemical that will help repel moisture and stains as well, which may come in handy if you have an outdoor railing that is exposed to the elements.
